Grammar
Grammar is the set of the rules that determines how words are spelled, how words are arranged, etc. If a child learns a language for the first time (the natural way), grammar rules is not explicitly taught. Once he or she learns to write, grammar rules have to be learned by heart (for instance, you can say in Dutch “ik word” (I become) and “jij wordt” (you become). There is no difference in the pronunciation of the word “word” but with “jij” you have to put a t after “word” according to a grammar rule.
When you are learning a foreign language, some grammar rules are important for speaking, such as word order and the way verbs are used. For writing, grammar is always important.
