Every child learns about negotiating from an early age; if you do this... then you`ll get this... Negotiating soon becomes a process whereby it is clear how the game must be played in order to achieve your goal. But in a professional situation, this "game" can become more complex.

Many negotiations begin from the same starting points:
- there are always 2 parties;

- one party wants something from the other;

- the other party wants something in return;

- negotiation therefore means that we conduct a conversation in order to come to an acceptable situation for both parties (win-win situation).

Those that negotiate in a professional manner will not enter into such a conversation lightly. Such a negotiator will make thorough preparations, know which strategy is most likely to lead to the desired outcome, tries to find out as much as possible about the other party and finally, is familiar with all the techniques that can be used during the negotiation process.

At the beginning of each lesson we start by listing the so-called lesson aims. This list details everything you should know and be able to do after completing the lesson.

After completing the lessons you should be able to:
-list the basic characteristics of negotiating;

-explain the importance of recording the results of a negotiation;

-explain that there are different kinds of negotiators;

-explain the meaning of a mediator;

-describe the meaning of a power balance;

-explain what is understood by the term culture and why culture can be such an important element of negotiating;

-describe the similarities and differences between negotiating and selling;

-define two kinds of negotiation, including the negotiation method used in each case;

-name the basic concepts of negotiating.
